You'd be hard pressed to find a more wide-ranging roster of artists at any other Northwest music-related event than the one lined up for the 17th Annual Olympia Experimental Music Festival. This year, the fest welcomes more than 20 artists, including the likes of Eurostache, Squim, Pavonine and Megabats, along
Military Life
Two years ago, Maggie Connors, Army wife and Edward Jones financial advisor, decided that she wanted to find a way to give back to the military community. After she bounced ideas back and forth with her husband, she settled on sending deployed Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers care packages. Connor's idea

There's a delicate balance that is struck with Brute Heart: feathery violin and vocals are buoyed by a strumming bass line and skipping drums. The combination at times reaches a hypnotic hum, and at other times approaches a rousing folk backbeat. What most often reaches the forefront is this intriguing

Sometimes a band will come along with a series of songs that sound naggingly as though you've heard them many times before ... hazily, quietly from a nearby speaker, or lurking in the background of a movie scene. Even though you've never heard the song before, somehow it seems to

You like bass, sure, but are you ready to go on a motherfucking bass ODYSSEY? An odyssey is nothing to be taken lightly, my friend. ... But of course you're ready. Of course you're ready for an evening of bass mastery on display, the likes of which have rarely been

Can I be honest with you? Good. My brother loves Rishloo. He is a fan of metal in a way I cannot quite wrap my brain around. Whenever he tries to talk to me about metal, he always brings up Rishloo - a band he is convinced I will like

Honestly, Bobble Tiki feels like he's been getting promotional messages about and Facebook invites for Tin Man's CD release show for Somewhere in the Middle since 1987. That can't be, of course. Tin Man founder Rusty Parrish created Tin Man after years spent in punk bands, not to mention years

People can complain that Friday nights at The Royal Lounge mean nothing but fake tans, leering eyes and long lines. But why complain when you can revel? Stories circulate far and wide about the back corner make outs and the sweaty dancing that make up Olympia's most notorious meat market.

These pretzels are making me thirsty. But I mean, at only 50 cents apiece, it's impossible not to scarf down four in a row. If only I had some ... oh, yes, there it is. Microbrews for $2.75 and wells for $2.50 every weekday afternoon from 3-6 p.m. Magoo's Annex

Sure, it's fun as hell to watch your buddy slam down six vodka shooters in a row while the cab outside honks its horn. But what would your mother say if she witnessed this grotesque pre-party ritual? Where's the class? Tacoma's Stanley and Seafort's offers a more mother-appropriate approach to

I don't feel at all guilty about the pun above. They're fun to write, puns, not to mention de rigueur in entertainment review titles. They're scattered throughout Riot to Follow's production of Honk! The Ugly Duckling Musical like chicken feed in a barnyard. Kids enjoy puns. They also like hummable

The device of a "play within a play" is hardly new, of course. Theater has always been meta. A Midsummer Night's Dream incorporates Pyramus and Thisbe, and Hamlet directs a loaded performance of The Mousetrap. Cyrano berates a ham actor, Montfleury. Actors love finding excuses to overact, and portraying a

Is it wrong that I secretly wished Lakewood Playhouse's production of Sweeney Todd would be a little bit more like a GWAR concert? My instincts say yes, but my heart says no. Not that I wanted a horde of spastic metalheads kicking me in the head, but if there is one

I've never been an expert on hip-hop, having been sheltered from it through the majority of my formative years. What I knew was relegated to what flew by me on the radio, and the years when that exposure would have happened were a particularly fallow period for the genre, coming

Every Tuesday at 4 p.m., the Harmon Tap Room becomes the rendezvous location and take-off point for the Harmon Bike Club. The Tacoma-based cycling and social group meets for weekly rides around the Puget Sound. This bunch of spinners raises money for Mary Bridge Children's Hospital's Child Abuse Intervention Department.

The new show will present about 85 pieces from baskets to "Pilchuck Stumps," plus stuff from Chihuly's private collection of objects ranging from Native American baskets and wool blankets to canoes and Edward S. Once again, Susan Christian is showing her painted stick constructions at her own gallery, Salon Refu. The paintings are assemblages of various kinds of sticks, mostly lathe, which she puts together in rectangular shapes and paints as if they were stretched canvases. The last time I reviewed an exhibition of these
