All juried shows are alike: a few outstanding artworks, a whole bunch of so-so stuff, and a few really bad pieces. The sixth annual juried art exhibit at The Gallery at Tacoma Community College is no exception. I’ll talk about the good stuff. Ron Hinson’s untitled painted construction does not stand

The show is called ICONcepts, but it could just as well be called the beatification of Dale Chihuly and Lynn Di Nino. The term “icon” is one of those words the meaning of which has been so expanded through common usage and misusage that it can mean almost anything, from

Surely you’ve seen the posters by now: Naked Tacoma. 20 participants, 32 breasts, 16 vaginas, four penises, two butt cheeks. Attention grabbing, isn’t it? It’s the opening show of Paul Uhl’s new delight gallery inside Sanford & Son, and it’s the first of three similarly themed shows planned for the gallery.

The de la Torres brothers’ motto must be anything worth doing is worth over-doing. They exploit the transparency and glimmer of blown and cast glass the way a bad comic exploits a cheap laugh. Similarly, their art celebrates and parodies Mexican and Mexican-American culture. Mexicans who immigrated to Southern California

Perry Onorio is trying his best to keep the Black Front Gallery in Olympia alive. I’m afraid his chances for success are slim to none. Keeping a small art gallery alive anywhere in the South Sound is tough — especially if it’s a gallery that shows risky, young artists. The

Since opening this past December, Fulcrum Gallery has been known for cutting-edge art with an emphasis on sculptural work and installations. Lynn Di Nino is a funny lady. But you knew that already, didn’t you? She’s clever, and she’s a skilled craftsperson. But that begs the question: does that necessarily make for great art? Cleverness alone often makes for gimmicky, pseudo art. A good pun — visual or literary — can

Olympia is losing the only thing it has that resembles a cutting-edge art gallery. It’s not surprising. When it comes down to dollars and cents, Olympia is not much of an art town. There may be a shipload of artists in town, but there’s less than a rowboat load of
